Google Maps App Gets a Major Upgrade

With the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google Maps saw a significant upgrade in what the company calls “material design.” Some of the upgrades include the addition of bolder headers and solid flat colors.

Perhaps the most noteworthy change is that Google has partnered with other app makers to make their app extremely interactive. Under the new system, you can use OpenTable to make restaurant reservations while browsing on Google Maps, and you can use Uber to get taxis or rideshares in your area.

The Uber addition is particularly helpful because it shows approximately how long it will take to get to your destination and an estimate of the cost. Google Maps already offers information for flights over long distances, but this will help people who need transportation on a local level. Uber will undoubtedly grow as a result of this exposure, which may threaten other transit systems and taxi service providers.

The new update is expected to come out any day, and it falls perfectly in line with the redesign that Android 5.0 brought to the table.
